MediEvil deserves all of this and more with its fantastic tone, entertaining characters and story, excellent level design, and stellar pacing, even if a few issues hold it back.
MediEvil successfully recreates the feel and the atmosphere of the original game, leaving intact all the problems it had in terms of gameplay, hitboxes and camera.
The MediEvil remake stays true to the original and was modernised quite well despite some minor deficits. In terms of gameplay it is a tad too old-fashioned.
Thank you Sony for a great re-release! I definitely recommend at this price point! In any conversation I've had with a video game enthusiast, MediEvil is never a title that has never come up.
There's perfectly good reason for that, it's average at best. The Remaster on the Playstation 4 is no different. No, really.
It's exactly the same game, complete with sloppy combat mechanics where you will be hit by enemies while flailing your weapons about.
Health depletes without much warning and having to repeat a very short level early-on in the game to gain enough Health Potions to withstand the upcoming levels, is not something many modern gamers would want to tolerate.
I'm baffled by the developers choices here; they fixed nothing and only re-skinned what we played 21 years ago. It's beautiful but still the same slog it always has been.
That being said, if you can get beyond the odd difficulty spike post level 3-ish, it is possible to enjoy aspect of MediEvil.
You'll eventually adapt to the broken camera-system and avoid getting anywhere near enemies. Obtaining new weapons is fun and completing levels fully can be a good challenge.
I just can't help but feel it's a shame not more was done here. A re-skin wasn't a good choice here, it's arguable that Sir Daniel needed yet another resurrection but I can't help but feel that whatever sorcery was involved here was half-baked.
The original game had always been in my all time top 10 favorite games. I played this many, many, many hours as a teenager.
It had definitely stood the test of time. Updated graphics are great. It had an added difficulty level in some places.
Yet its still just as I remember. For those of us hardcore fans it's an easy platinum within 24 hours of starting. It you're new to the game, I'm sure it will take a lot longer.
I wish that some of the trophies were a little harder to get. Maybe a speed trophy for beating the game under 8 hours or so? The lost souls that are new to this game are an excellent addition.
I just wish they had added some other extra side missions or minigames. Just to have an excuse to keep playing it.

While Sir Dan does not recover health automatically between levels, he can utilize Life Bottles to automatically recover all of his health should it be completely depleted.
Sir Dan is able to encounter two varieties of gargoyle heads throughout the game: green gargoyles offer Sir Dan information, while blue gargoyles offer him ammunition for his weapons in exchange for gold he finds.
Dan can use the chalices to gain access to the Hall of Heroes, where he can talk to one of several non-playable characters to receive a new weapon or other item.
While the game remains largely identical in content to the original MediEvil , several new features have been introduced. This includes the ability to toggle between a primary and secondary weapon, first introduced as a feature in MediEvil 2 , [10] the "Dan Cam", an optional camera viewpoint which uses an over-the-shoulder perspective, [11] and a compendium of information about the game's characters and enemies, known as the Book of Gallowmere.
According to the executive producer of the MediEvil remake, Jeff Nachbauer, Other Ocean Emeryville wished to keep most elements from the original MediEvil intact, unless they felt there was a good reason to change something; this included the retention of several glitches present in the original MediEvil , which were considered by the developers to be crucial to the feel of the game.
Due to the game's farther draw distance and wider aspect ratio, new background areas that didn't exist in the original MediEvil needed to be created, and additional trees and foliage were added to certain areas.

Most in-game dialogue was recycled from the original MediEvil the only exception to this is Zarok's command of "Fire!
