As an adaptation, the story wanders too far from the straightforward, zippy little mystery that Agatha Christie wrote and unfortunately none of the extra twists and turns really add any substance.
The padded out story is flat and predictable. The lead actors don't have very much chemistry together, although Jessica Raine turns in a winning performance as Tuppence.
Production values are high and it's a cute show to look at, but all in all it's very forgettable. This updating of Christie's "Partners in Crime" moves the action to the 's and is, consequently, more 'realistic' than the earlier Francesca Annis version, with a more diverse cast and believable plot points.
That said, plot threads and action do wander around sometimes, with continuity and scene jumps that can be jarring and confusing. Not having read the original story, it's probable that Christie's work is difficult to translate to the screen, inasmuch as the earlier Annis' version has the same problems, magnified.
Tommy is also much less the dashing action hero here than he is in the Annis' version, which reflects the more realistic, less dated style of this recent production.
I think David Walliams Tommy used to be half of a very funny British comedy duo called Little Britain -- if not, he's certainly a dead ringer for the guy.

Here, Tommy is a blithering goof and Tuppence is flat out rude. That aside, the stories are pretty good I'm a diehard British mystery fan so I enjoyed them I liked this MUCH better than the c.
True, this don't stick entirely to the book, which I read years ago. Jessica Raine played Tuppence quite well but it took a little while to get used to David Walliams' quirky portrayal of Tommy.
However, it definitely "grew on me" and now I think I shall always think of Walliams when I think of Tommy. And, of course, James Fleet is good whenever I see him.

With Tommy undertaking a variety of business opportunities, and Tuppence trying to dissuade him, the couple find themselves in the wrong place at the right time to solve a mystery - or two - and perhaps save someone's life.
They are about to enter a world of espionage and skulduggery guided by Tommy's mysterious Uncle, Major Carter. It is a world which will prove easier to enter than to leave.
I'm disappointed that so many did not enjoy this series. I love Walliams and wish he were in more dramas.
Along with Steer as the handless chemist they make a great ensemble. It appears some were disappointed because this was not a serious, grim show.
Granted it was not Tinker, Tailor Soldier but I can't believe it as supposed to be. I gave it a 9 because the plots could be better but as a vehicle for these wonderful characters it worked.

If this was suppose to be how the UK approached the Cold War, everyone there would be speaking Russian! The two characters were portrayed in a more believable and realistic manner in the Marple episode 3 in season 2, "By the Pricking of My Thumbs".
I could not even watch the second storyline so I just fast forwarded to watch the last 15 minutes to find out the conclusion of the story.
I just didn't want to waste 3 hours watching bad acting and an extremely badly written script. As someone who enjoys couples who solve mysteries and defeat evil and, more specifically, as someone who enjoyed the original books very much , this was not quite what I was hoping for.
While Jessica Raine seemed to get what Christie had intended, Walliams never found his groove as Tommy. This may be due to the ill-conceived resetting of the couple and the first two novels that the two series are adapting to a post-WWII bored suburban couple.
While there are elements of ennui-driven motivation for both characters in the novels and short stories Ultimately Tommy flounders as Tuppence seems to be driving the train for any and all involvement in each plot.
It's a miracle that the husband survives the first five minutes, let alone two whole seasons worth of adventures. You'd be better off watching the early eighties incarnation of James Warwick and Francesca Annis.
The production values may be typical Brit filmed exteriors and taped interiors, but the writing, direction and acting are so much more engaging and dead-on to what Christie created.
Not as good as the books, nor any where near the earlier efforts. The passion is not there; I really don't believe their being a couple. So after that, what is there, since their relationship is key.
The motivations seem forced. It is well filmed,though and the costumes are nicely done. However, this version is more of a crime than anything.
I don't know if they needed better casting, or if the writer has ever picked up any of the books with Tommy and Tuppence as the main characters.
