In 's London, ambitious medical student Victor Frankenstein attends a circus performance, where he helps save an injured aerialist , Lorelei, with the aid of a nameless hunchback enslaved by the circus' ringleader, who harbors feelings for the girl.
Impressed by the hunchback's vast knowledge of human anatomy, acquired from stolen books, Victor rescues him, drains the cyst on his back that causes his physical abnormality and gives him a harness to improve his posture — he then names him "Igor Straussman" after his roommate who is not often at home.
The two then become partners in Victor's ongoing experiments to resurrect life through artificial means, incurring the wrath of devoutly religious police inspector Roderick Turpin, who views their experiments as blasphemy.
When Victor shows Igor his use of electricity to animate eyes, Igor suggests he made mistakes attaching the nerves, leading Victor to ask Igor to perform the surgical parts of his experiment.
Victor procures parts from dead animals and makes Igor restore the organs, which Victor secretly uses to create a monstrous chimpanzee-like creature nicknamed "Gordon".
Igor reunites with Lorelei, now masquerading as the mistress of a closeted gay baron , upsetting Victor, who views Lorelei as a distraction.
Igor invites Lorelei to a demonstration of their experiment, which goes awry when Gordon escapes and wreaks havoc through the university before being killed by Victor and Igor.
Lorelei is horrified by Victor's experiments and urges Igor to stop him from pursuing the matter further, but Igor is reluctant to do so upon learning that Victor is driven by the need to atone for his indirect role in the death of his older brother, Henry, for which Victor's domineering father blames Victor.
Victor is expelled from college for his unorthodox methods, but attracts the attention of his wealthy, arrogant classmate Finnegan, who wants him to create an artificial humanoid creature.
Victor and Igor outline a behemoth named "Prometheus", but Igor's deepening relationship with Lorelei soon causes a rift between them.
Turpin and his men raid Victor's laboratory, hell-bent on destroying his inventions. During the raid Igor stumbles onto the corpse of the real Igor Straussman, dead from an overdose, and the source of the eyes Victor had used in his experiments When he attacks Victor, Turpin loses a hand and is blinded in one eye.
Victor and Igor escape in a carriage sent by Finnegan and are taken to his family's estate. Turpin is fired from Scotland Yard for having invaded Victor's home without a warrant.
Finnegan provides the scientists with the necessary funds to build Prometheus and offers them laboratory facilities at his family's estate in Scotland.
Igor is suspicious of Finnegan and outraged with Victor for his treatment of the original Igor. After a falling out, Victor departs for Scotland alone.
Finnegan kidnaps and binds Igor, revealing his plans to kill Victor once Prometheus is complete and weaponize his creation. Igor is then thrown into the River Thames to drown, but manages to escape and reunites with Lorelei, who nurses him back to health.
Igor and Lorelei embark to Finnegan's estate in order to rescue Victor. Igor finds Victor on the verge of using lightning to animate Prometheus.
Victor ignores Igor's pleas and activates the machine. A power surge overloads the machinery, killing Finnegan. During the ensuing chaos, Turpin unexpectedly arrives, blaming and threatening Victor for his creation.
Prometheus suddenly steps forward. Victor is initially ecstatic that the experiment has worked, sharing a brief moment with Prometheus, thinking him to be his resurrected brother Henry.
Victor quickly realizes that the experiment has failed: Prometheus has no consciousness and can not talk.
The shocked Turpin opens fire on Prometheus, who goes into a rage, killing Turpin and nearly killing Victor.
Victor created this monster literally, but he is also the reason the creature turned to evil acts. If Frankenstein had not dug up corpses, if he had not cut them up and sewn them together, if he had not animated this creature, if he had not abandoned him and allowed him to run loose in the world, if he had not antagonized the creature, none of this would have happened.
Victor is the source of all of this evil. And after the monster exacts its revenge upon his family and friends, Victor finally reveals how alike he is to his monster.
He spends the rest of his life hunting his creation. The real monster, however, is not the monstrosity Frankenstein made. It was himself, who created the monster, and then left the world to fend for itself until it affected his own, personal life.
One of the main threads of Frankenstein is the question of nature v. Are people born the way they will be or do their surroundings dictate who they will become?
Mary Shelley poses both sides of the argument through her two main characters. Victor Frankenstein starts his narration to Walton with his childhood.
Victor was the eldest of three, and insists "no creature could have more tender parents. But more important than being curious is the fact that Victor was born this way.
He can not change these things; it is part of his nature. Victor even takes the nature argument a step further by seemingly claiming that everything throughout his entire life was destined to result in creating a monster and having to suffer because of it.
If he had not been born naturally curious, if his father had denounced Agrippa more heartily, and if his professor had not been so impressive then Victor would not have chosen this path; but alas, destiny had it out for him from the beginning.
On the other side of this argument is the creature. After his animation, the creature is abandoned by Victor.
With a blank slate for a mind, the creature is left to figure out the world on his own. For a time, the creature is as innocent as a child — he tastes, touches, and tries everything around him.
As the creature hides here, he learns and is able to deduce the real reason for his suffering. No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses.
I had never yet see a being resembling, or who claimed any intercourse with me. What was I? The question again recurred, to be answered only with groans" A contrasting argument can be found in Nature versus Nurture.
Part of the brilliance of Frankenstein is that it is an adaptation of other works disguised as an original story. At the beginning of the novel, Walton writes to his sister.
In his letters, he rejoices in the great adventure to the North Pole that he is embarking upon and how happy he is to be fulfilling his dreams. In this novel, Walton is the happy wedding guest who is unaware that he's on the wrong path.
One morning Walton and his crew awake to find Victor adrift and rescue him. After saving his life, Victor, like the mariner, is convinced that he must tell his story to Walton to save him from himself.
Frankenstein is also in conversation with Paradise Lost and Manfred. Loss of innocence is also a prevalent theme of Frankenstein.
On the precipice of manhood, Victor leaves to attend the university of Ingolstadt with lofty hopes and ambitions.
With the innocence of a child, Victor believes he can do anything - even create life from the dead. With this same childlike hope, Victor does the unthinkable.
Victor's life was innocent and picture-perfect as a young boy. He claims that "[His] parents were indulgent, and [his] companions amiable" His father also took great care not to subject his son to any "supernatural horrors.
As far as Victor was concerned, "a church-yard was. So,when he comes across the works of Agrippa at a bathhouse, the boy is overrun with "a new light [that] seemed to dawn upon [his] mind" at the thought of eternal life and reanimation This innocent wonder is the beginning of his downfall.
The first loss of innocence Victor encounters is that of his mother. After contracting scarlet fever from his cousin, Caroline Frankenstein dies.
While previously interested in Agrippa's claims to eternal life, the death of his mother undoubtedly contributed to a deeper study. But the moment that Victor's innocence is shattered beyond repair is the moment he creates life.
After spending some time at the university studying chemistry and the ways in which it could work with Agrippa's theories from his childhood, Victor "succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life, nay, more; [he] became [himself] capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter" He hoped that his "present attempts would at least lay the foundations of future success"

To its credit, it's not utterly terrible in term of presentation, in fact the visual is rather nice. It's quaintly dark and electric version of last decade metropolis, Tesla would approve.
James McAvoy as the titular Viktor really tries hard on establishing the character. Given the stale material, he still manages to squeeze some emotional scenes as well as a good chemistry with Radcliffe in a bromantic kind of way.
Andrew Scott from Moriarty fame, now plays the role of Inspector Turpin. He's the polar opposite of Viktor, conservative yet equally clever and ambitious.
Unfortunately, the far too familiar plot fails to produce any thrill, the strong acting prowess ends up rehearsing the same routine of mad scientist's banter.
There's screaming, philosophical argument, faux science and slight mental abuse by the two leads. It's a lot of noise of little dramatic effect.
Not that the script is bad in any way, it has occasional witty lines although any hint of humor or charm is muffled by the overly melancholy tone.
At some points, the movie tries to dabble in horror, action and even romance subplot. The atmosphere is already primed for thriller, but the shocking abomination is ironically timid and unmemorable.
Action consists of a few scenes of slow motions repetition. Despite the production offering distractions, the main story line is very straightforward and streamlined, and sadly also predictable.
