Save this movie for a time when you're rested, or at least ready to focus and invest some brain power into a dense and layered story. It's more of a old-fashioned foray into Sci Fi.
More like something that a modern Jules Verne or H. Wells might write. Dense and nuanced with lots of explanation of rules and big words that you may or may not understand without a dictionary.
If you're ready, this is a great film worth more than one watch. It's sure to be a cult classic both for it's technical execution as well as the questions it raises about morality.
Give your teenage kids bucks and a VHS camcorder. An hour later you will have the equivalent of this movie. Hard to hear and understand dialogue.
Very poor picture quality. There are like 3 characters in the film, they wear the same white shirt and tie the whole film. Their script is soooo bad.
Nothing makes sense. I had to look up the plot on wikipedia and even there it states it is a hard plot to follow.
Even reading the plot, I couldn't follow it. If I did not see a pictoral diagram showing the plot, I would still not get it. I saw the movie and can honestly say, if someone gave me the plot synopsis to read, I would not be able to tell I saw the related movie.
Steer clear. I guess this had a budget of like a thousand dollars. The guy that wrote it directed it and also starred in it. Total crap.
Primer is the most realistic science fiction movie I've ever seen, and hands down the best time travel movie of all time!
Many time travel stories depend on invoking either nostalgia for long-passed days or dystopian fear of distant futures. Primer, on the other hand, is in a class all its own.
To begin with, the time travel destinations are only hours or days removed from the present. This is part of what gives the film its very puzzling quality, as people do not age noticeably nor do environments change drastically within a few days time span.
As a result of this, the chronology of the film must be deduced primarily from the behavior, intentions, and dialogue of the characters; behavior which is unpredictable, intentions which evolve as the film moves along, and dialogue which is awesomely scientific.
Primer is difficult to understand. Whether you are a scientist or a science fiction fan, the first time you watch it you will probably only fully comprehend about half of it.
But this, for me, is the film's best quality. The urge to rewatch it is immediate due to the fascination invoked by what was not comprehended.
At this point I have watched it several times, and each time it makes more sense to me, however I still do not fully comprehend it.
Difficulties aside, Primer is a beautiful film with top-notch cinematography and an amazing score. It is very refreshing to see a science fiction film without the standard barrage of computer-generation and overly-dramatic music.
Any "special effects" experienced are the result of very well-thought-out shots combined with skillful editing. The music is well-placed, optimistically melancholy, and at the same time invokes an undeniable sense of wonder and possibility.
The acting is down-to-earth and believable. The characters portrayed are not superhuman and do not have unlimited resources.
The feeling that you get from the film is that you have become a witness to actual extraordinary events. In my opinion there is no other science fiction film time travel or otherwise that accomplishes this feat as well as Primer.
My first thought in the opening scenes: "Where did they find an actor with such true intelligence in the face? Piece of advice - pay attention to the names of the people and the types of relationships between them - you will not see these relationships unfold on screen but will find out about them from dialogues of the main characters.
This will give you the clues to what actually happened in detail. I am bad with remembering people's names and did not pay much attention to description of people's situations in the dialogues and came to regret it.
I got what happened at a high-level like, I am sure, most people but need to watch a second time now to write down names and relationships to understand more detail.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Primer is the most demanding, impressive, and intelligent film I have ever seen.
There is nothing that even approaches it. Shane Carruth directed, wrote, produced, scored, and edited Primer; in addition to starring as one of the two main characters.
Carruth spent two years editing the final film. Being able to undertake any of those tasks is impressive, but just consider the level of commitment it must take to be able to do all those things.
And when the end result is one of the most enthralling films that you will ever see, then Shane Carruth deserves to be acknowledged. Primer is often referred to as a science-fiction film about time travel, which, in very simple terms it is, but it's so much deeper than that.
The main premise focuses on close friends Abe and Aaron. Two extremely intelligent and ambitious engineers living relatively successful suburban lives while developing inventions in the little spare time they have.
When Abe and Aaron discover that one of their projects has the unexpected benefit of disconnecting anything contained in it from the passage of time, they realise that they've stumbled onto something that will effectively allow them to time travel to a limited degree.
Despite their intelligence, Abe and Aaron don't fully understand how their device works, and begin using it in an effort to both exploit the potential benefits it offers, while also trying to unravel how it functions.
What initially seems to be the answer to all their problems quickly becomes a problem in itself, and their seemingly harmless manipulation soon causes events to escalate beyond their control.
What makes Primer so different from other films where time travel is possible, is the fact that the ability to time travel isn't the central issue, it's the effect that the ability to manipulate time has on you and those around you.
Although they are close friends, Abe and Aaron have distinct personalities. Abe is more cautious and reserved, while Aaron is more driven and reckless.
These personal qualities are evident early on but they don't seem to have impacted their friendship. However, it soon becomes apparent that exploiting their discovery brings these issues to the fore.
Early successes, like profiting from lucrative stock market picks as a result of prior knowledge, rapidly become overshadowed by divergent goals and unsolvable paradoxes that they struggle to find solutions to.
Diminishing trust further fractures their relationship, and they progress from using their device to gain an advantage over everyone else, to trying to gain an advantage over each other.
