In short, this is a suprisingly nice little sci-fi film. Very charming characters, make up effects, set design, matte paintings, miniatures, alien masks.
If you're looking for a solid B movie look no further. The ending is a little "Meh", but aside from that I had a great time.
A scrappy, but ultimately good-hearted, gang of space pirates befriend a stowaway kid and try to get him home. Roger Corman assembled some decent actors, excellent music, some OK effects, and made an overall enjoyable space flick.
Plus, there's a weird horse-head mosquito hooker lady, and that's so transcendentally goofy that you just have to appreciate it.
Sure, the plot doesn't entirely make sense at times, the characters are paper thin, and the movie is so on the rails that main characters bite the dust and no one seems to really care.
But for a movie you let run in the background, groove to the soundtrack, and watch the puckish grin consume the kid's face when he shoots down a ship for the first time -- there are worst ways to waste an evening.
The film was near as I can tell a way to make a film fast with as little spent on budget as possible. So what did they do, They stole footage from Battle Beyond the Stars and possibility of one or two others, added new voice dialect and simply had to film anything new with live actors and sets that were just shy of toilet paper tubing and Christmas lights.
A poor attempt at a sci-fi movie. If your into cheesy B flicks, this might be for you. One person found this helpful. I had not watched this movie since childhood, but found I still like it to this day.
Yes, it is cheesy, campy, and low budget, but fun. Anyone who likes Roger Corman classics will enjoy this movie.

Its an endearing film which still entertains and holds up today. Certainly its far superior to the cgi dreck churned out on the sci-fi channel.
The picture is fine, a massive improvement over the old vhs and dvd releases. Grain is present and correct. Extras are three interviews with David Mendenhall Peter the 10 year old boy , producer Roger Corman and production supervisor Clark Henderson.
There is also a trailer but no scene, language or subtitle options of any kind. The sleeve states the disc to be region A locked but it played fine on my Xbox One.
This Scorpion release bluray is limited to copies and has been out for 18 months. With that in mind and it being region B friendly i'd recommend any 80s kid to pick this up.
Best enjoyed on a triple bill with The Last Starfighter and Starcrash. This movie was one of the first kid driven space adventures and in my opinion one of the best.
However the special effects and musical soundtrack have been used more times than I have had hot dinners, not surprising since it was produced by Roger Corman.
Please don't let that spoil it for you it is still in my opinion well worth the money. A good b syfy movie using recycled space craft from battle beyond the stars the movie it's self I couldn't remember the title for years I had to look the movie up on Google.

PillPack Pharmacy Simplified. It's a Star Wars rip-off! I was that ten year old kid and I so loved Star Wars and still do that anything with space battles, robots and smart-arse heroes was immediately watched with great suspension of disbelief.
I really thought that Space Raiders was, along with Battlestar Galactica, the mutt's nuts, as it were, of Star Wars-type films. It was duly taped on a later broadcast and said tape did wear out because said kid watched it so much.
I still watched it while I was a secondary school, and I'd even get up at some hideously early hour so I could watch it before going to school.
After the tape went the way of the dodo I fortunately found a second-hand copy in a cash converters store and was able to keep watching it, though more out of habit that for a fix of space hokum.
It will never earn the mantle of greatest sci-fi flick ever as that honour will go to the original Star Wars, but it's still watchable if you are a member of the kid-young-teen bracket.
It's fun, it doesn't get too heavy and bogged down in volumes of exposition and it's got some very good ideas. The problem is that the budget didn't do justice to those ideas.
The effects are very cheap, but I have seen worse. The robots were pretty well done, even if it is obvious that they're men in plastic suits.
The acting isn't brilliant, but then this is an escapist b-movie, not Shakespeare, and to be honest, the level of acting is about right for the film - the actors are all pretty competent in their own way but they won't be winning any awards.
