In terms of the story it is pretty much a re-make of the first film with a white woman Annie Tarrant Kelly Rowan being caught up in a series of murders blamed on the Candyman Tony Todd.
I mention her race because race is an integral part of the entire Candyman story. Since then he has always been looking to renew that love.
The problem is that this is completely unoriginal. Even then I still enjoyed this movie. For instance, Annie scratches his face when he first appears, his flesh gets opened up, and bees fly out of it.
Great scene and effect. Just as important is that underlying the whole story is the racism of America. Miscegenation or interracial sex was a huge fear of white America.
It believed that would lead to the end of the white race and the downfall of the country. That was what led to the death of Robitaille and the reason why his tortured soul continued to live into the present.
If not for the original sin of America: racism and slavery Candyman would not exist. Given that background you can read a lot into the ending and analyze what it means.
That puts the movie far above others in the genre. One person found this helpful. This movie is the definition of 90's horror.
The acting is good, the camera work and all that jazz are Hollywood quality, but the movie gets to be a bit much towards the end. It's like they tried too hard to make everything fit together, the story of Candyman, his forbidden love and then his murder, all connects to this other story and then another, I can't explain to much without spoiling the movie.
So if you liked the first one or you're a big Tony Todd fan, then give this one a shot. I was looking forward to watching this movie.
What a waste of time and money. I liked it and I enjoyed the new Orleans setting I liked the back story and I enjoyed hearing more about what really happened to candy man that made him the way he was I did not like the cast as well as the original I was glad the used the same music score and of course Tony Todd was awesome as usual but the female the movie centered around just wasn't much compared to Virginia Madsen in the original.
Liked this movie, especially the bayou scenery. The ending was typical for horror films, but didn't like it anyway. I'm going to look for the original with Virginia Madsen, as one of the reviewer mentioned.
This movie is okay. I really just ordered it to add to my horror collection.
