Mehr als das hat die Story leider auch nicht zu bieten. Der Film erzählt die Geschichte eines Kindersoldaten mit einer durchgängigen Intensität, wie man es nur in wenigen Filmen sieht.
Das liegt vor allem an den Schauspielern. Idris Elba macht seine Sache gut, doch was die jungen Darsteller Abraham Mehr erfahren. Daniel P. Funkunaga hat mich mit "True Detective" bereits begeistert.
Aber er kann auch Film. Idris Elba als Kindersoldaten-Anführer ist top. Auch die "Kids" sind sehr originell und real. Das ganze Elend und die Sinnlosigkeit kommen perfekt beim Zuschauer an.
Man ist mittendrin, will aber soweit weg wie möglich sein. Tragisch aber leider immer noch Realität in Zentralafrika. Bereits in den ersten Minuten wird beim Zuschauer Interesse an der Hauptperson Agu geweckt, aus dessen Perspektive die Geschichte erzählt wird.

Fukunaga gives the film a visual grandeur that makes it feel like it's taking place after the world has ended, and all that's left for Agu is this morass of endless, uncaring violence.
Alison Willmore. Fukunaga's hurtling camera and taut cutting keep Beasts of No Nation only just this side of hallucinatory, and Elba is the kind of titanic actor to kick it to a near-mythic level.
David Edelstein. It's a powerful tale of lost innocence, albeit sometimes heavy-handed in its depiction of the plight of African child soldiers.
Geoffrey Macnab. Attah is an industrious little actor, but his fall from innocence is not delineated with the same force as the carnage.
Peter Rainer. Idris Elba gives a powerhouse performance as the warlord of a rebel African army that trains children as soldiers.
The Oscar for Best Supporting Actor should have his name on it. Peter Travers. Beasts tells a broadly traumatic story and tells it well, but lacks the kinds of specifics that could make it a truly memorable film.
David Sims. A harrowing, surreal, and often times bleak portrayal of a reality many of us shy away from. Allen Almachar.
Fukunaga left the inflexibilities to tell the authentic and harsh chronicle of a child soldier with all the realities that it implies.
Yasser Medina. It will be seared into viewers' memories for quite some time. Leslie Combemale. Beasts is a harrowing experience, but a powerful one.
It might read as derivative to a cynic, but there's something palpable at the film's core that can't be denied. Dominic Griffin.
